Odanadi directors Stanly and Parashu are being threatened with imprisonment following a raid in Mysore yesterday afternoon, in which they rescued a teenage girl from a house where she had been kept illegally as a domestic slave.
The 16-year-old girl, who suffers from severe epilepsy, had been trafficked from rural Andhra Pradesh just eight days ago and was discovered yesterday morning after fleeing to a neighbour’s house, claiming that she had been badly beaten and imprisoned against her will.
Police and a team of Odanadi representatives raided a smart three-story house in the suburbs of Mysore and discovered the terrified girl hiding under a kitchen countertop. She was visibly distressed, but her employers – owners of a large interior design company – denied all charges and claimed that they had simply taken the girl to Mysore for 'sightseeing' and were planning to return her to her family.
Since then the victim has been manipulated into retracting her complaint by the police officer leading the investigation, who freely admits to having received a substantial bribe from her employers.
False counter-charges have now been brought against Stanly and Parashu for trespassing on private property, vandalism, abduction and intent to endanger lives – despite indisputable evidence that yesterday's rescue operation was carried out in conjunction with police and following correct legal protocol.
In a new twist, the accused couple have now paid for the victim's mother to fly over from Andhra Pradesh for a press conference to publicly denounce the trafficking charges against them.
As a result Stanly and Parashu have been forced to go into hiding this weekend while they prepare their own complaint against the police. They have already informed UNICEF and the National Human Rights Committee and hope to resolve the case using video and photographic evidence taken during the raid, official police records and eyewitness accounts.
It’s been a challenging couple of days, but Odanadi's directors remain confident that the truth is on their side. Stanly says: “It is so important for people outside India to understand how corrupt the justice system here is and how easily a vulnerable trafficking victim can be manipulated. Justice should not be determined by power and money, it should be according to truth – and that is what we are fighting for.”
